Next up on our WA coastal adventures is Monkey Mia, a strangely named town in the middle of no where. It’s a place famous for dolphins and you can watch them being fed each morning.
Our plan was to spend 7 nights here and relax after a whirlwind couple of weeks socialising.
Friday, Jun 16th – (Day 71)
MONKEY MIA – Our time in Geraldton came to a close today, we were off to Monkey Mia, a spot we had been looking to for a long time now.
However, before setting off, we had booked into the 10am session of that Milky Way Galaxy thing that we missed out on yesterday. We thought it would be a 360 degree VR tour of the galaxy, but it wasn’t quite that.
It was a presentation on the SKA Project, which was pretty awesome to learn about. Can’t wait to see what they find when it launches in 5 years!
Now onward to Monkey Mia! It was about a 5 hour drive in total along some pretty barren roads that gave us visions of the Nullarbor all over again. On the way we stopped over in a small town named Northampton.
Northampton has a population of 800 people and is a one road town, but for some reason they seem to churn out AFL superstars. The likes of Patty Cripps, Josh Kennedy, Harry Taylor, Daniel Chick, Paul Haselby, among others, all came from here. Pretty wild when you think of it.
Then it was back on the road. By now it was past 2pm and we hadn’t had lunch yet and had given up hope, before we found a random little spot in Meadow. It was the Billabong Roadhouse which for some reason had a great range of veggie options to eat.
We arrived at the resort just before 5pm and setup our caravan in a spot surrounded by loud kids, doh!
Then we spent the evening exploring the resort area and making some tea. We saw the likes of emus, dolphins and echidnas which was pretty cool.
Later on we watched the first episode of the new season of Black Mirror and then called it a night, tired from a long day of driving.
Saturday, Jun 17th – (Day 72)
We awoke about 7:30am to a crow going buckwild on top of our caravan making all sorts of noises. But it actually turned out to be a blessing as the dolphin feeding is 7:45am each morning, so we quickly got up and headed towards the pier spot.
There were over 100+ people there waiting to watch, as this is what the area is kind of famous for. Unfortunately for us no dolphins turned up so we missed out on the shenanigans for today.
Rather than go back to bed, we decided to stay up as it was a beautiful sunny morning. The entire day was a pretty lazy one, spent either reading outside in the sun, playing games, listening to footy, or simply just lying around. Our type of holiday!
Later on in the arvo we went for a walk along the beach and stumbled upon The Monkey Bar, which was a cool little sports bar on the beach.
We got ourselves some beer and chips and sat around enjoying the serenity. Well, that was until a bunch of kids turned up and turned the place into a circus. That was our queue to leave.
The rest of the afternoon and evening was much like yesterday. We continued watching Black Mirror season 6, with the second episode of the season being very dark but also fascinating. This is easily one of the best shows on tv at the moment.
Sunday, Jun 18th – (Day 73)
Another early start this morning, the alarm waking us at 6:45 this time rather than an annoying crowd. Adam had a zoom meeting with his trading buddies back home scheduled for 7am which ended up going almost 3 hours.
The bonus of getting up this early was we got to see an awesome sunrise. The sunrises and sunsets over here are absolutely spectacular.
Then the rest of today was almost a carbon copy of yesterday. Reading, footy on radio, reading, games and then heading for a walk along the beach and then a trip to the bar again.
Again, there were annoying kids so we didn’t last long. It was getting late on in the evening now and we had organised another online boardgames night with Jamie and Rach, so that occupied the rest of the night.
Also like last night, we watched another episode of Black Mirror. This show just gets better and better.
Monday, Jun 19th – (Day 74)
Another sleep in was ruined, this time by a scammer calling our phone at 7am. We didn’t have any real plans today so spent most of the morning lounging around.
This place is pretty remote and not anywhere near any towns, it’s a resort in the middle of nowhere so there’s not much to do other than relax, which is exactly what we wanted for a week.
After lunch we decided to go for a walk. It was about 2.5km but the sign said it would take roughly 90 minutes. In the end it only took about 45 minutes so I have no idea where they got 90 from. The walk was pretty nice, it was mostly through the sand and along the beach.
Once we got back we chilled out some more, this time lying on the beach. Adam finally finished Project Hail Mary, one of the great books!
Next we went for another business meeting at the Monkey Bar, giving it one more chance. Again, there were kids running wild so we moved on to the cafe just up the path which was a lot quieter.
Then we headed back to the caravan, made some tea, did dishes, had a shower and then watched the fourth episode of Black Mirror.
Tuesday, Jun 20th – (Day 75)
Finally an uninterrupted sleep in! We woke up about 9am to sunshine blaring in, so another day in paradise. Given it was snowing back home in Ballarat, we were definitely in the right place.
The rest of the morning was spent playing around at the caravan enjoying the sunshine. Then we had some lunch and went down to the beach for our first swim for the week.
Our next plan was to go canoeing, however we got there right when he was planning on packing up. He suggested we come back tomorrow morning and said there was a 4 hour option we could do, so that’s our plan for tomorrow!
When we were back at the caravan we had an impromptu games evening again with Jamie and Rach, then settled in for the night watching the season finale of Black Mirror.
Wednesday, Jun 21st – (Day 76)
Plan today – canoeing! But that wasn’t until around 11am or so, so we spent the morning just mucking around in the caravan.
Unfortunately the weather was a bit sour and there was a bit of rain, but it started to fine up just before we were set to head off. We collected some stuff for a picnic lunch at the resort store (nachos & salsa, chocolate).
We were greeted by the eccentric guy who runs the canoeing rentals, he was a dead ringer of Funky Kong. He gave us some good ideas of spots to visit and then we were off in our kayaks for the next 3 hours.
It was a pretty beautiful spot. We had lunch on the shore, then went exploring the red sand cliffs which were full of prickles, but when we eventually got to the top it gave awesome views.
We had a little swim and then it was back in the kayak. It took about an hour each way and we were pretty exhausted by the end. But it was an awesome way to spend the day.
After a little relax and showers, we headed to the cafe for happy hour and caught up on some work. We came up with a new business idea – writing Airbnb house manuals for $$$. It looks a niche market without much competition on platforms like Fiverr, so that’s our next project!
We then cooked ourselves a stir fry for tea, Linda played some more Zelda and then we watched the Ready Player One movie. Given we’d just listened to the audiobook, we were bitterly disappointed in how they turned a good book into an average movie.
Tomorrow night we plan to watch The Martian after having listened to it earlier in the trip as well. Tomorrow is also our last day in Monkey Mia before we moved on.
Thursday, Jun 22nd – (Day 77)
This morning we were awoken pretty early to the loud noises of people around us packing up, so we just decided to get up and have breaky.
It was our last day here, but given we’d pretty much seen everything, our plan was to have a relaxing day and not doing too much. We also thought we’d do a bit of washing as well as it had been a while.
Adam got out his piano and started learning the Succession theme, it’s coming along pretty well so far. Around 3:30pm we decided to go back to the cafe and work on our new projects and get some work done. It was such an awesome spot overlooking the water and really nice weather to boot.
We spent the rest of the afternoon and evening lounging around at the caravan for the last time here, made ourselves a shepherds pie for tea and finished the night watching The Martian. What an awesome movie!
