Four Nights in Perth

The plan for the next four nights was a stop in Perth. Then we’d start our descent up north of Western Australia, our first trip up there which we were excited for.

THURSDAY, JUN 8TH – (DAY 63)

PERTH – Today it was time to move on from Bunbury after an awesome five nights. It would be sad, but rather than head off early, we spent the morning in Bunbury one last time.

We got up around 8am and watched Game 3 of the NBA Finals. It was a bit of a fizzer with Denver having a decent win to go up 2-1. But then it was on to the main event – the Mario Kart Grand Final.

But again, you wouldn’t read about it. After 12 races we were all locked on 28 points each, another draw! So to settle it we had a 4 round overtime, which Micah sealed with a win on the final race. Fair to say he was pretty happy.

Then it was time to pack up and say goodbye to everyone. It was a brilliant few days and we we sad to be leaving, but it was time to continue the journey. This time a 2 hour drive to Perth.

The weather started so nice today, but by the time we got to Perth the rain was back, but luckily it didn’t last too long. We were staying at a resort a little way out of town but it was pretty nice.

New caravan spot in Perth

We ended up staying here the rest of the night and had tea at the cafe onsite. Then the rest of the night was spent catching up on work and Linda finally getting to play the Zelda game after the long wait.

Friday, Jun 9th – (Day 64)

This morning we had a little bit of a sleep in before heading off and finding a fix for our towbar. The one we have is all rattly due to all the connections, so we wanted to find one that was in one piece and more stable.

Unfortunately this proved a hard thing to find. We went to a few shops but none had what we were after, so we gave up on that idea and grabbed some lunch at a random bakery. They even had a coffee scroll, which are rare to find in WA we’ve since found.

After that we headed off to a Westfields shopping centre for a look around and to get some groceries for the weekend, then we headed to Kings Park, a spot recommended by Geoff. It was a good recommendation indeed, it’s a pretty awesome spot.

By now it was getting later in the arvo, so we headed back to the park for a chill out, then cooked some tea. Then it was off to the Fremantle Prison for a torchlight ghost tour. But before the tour we stopped at the Little Creatures Brewery for a couple of beers.

The ghost tour wasn’t bad. It went for about 90 minutes, but it was more of a tour than a ghost tour, and we didn’t get to see any ghosts. Then we drove back home about half an hour, as usual listening to our audiobook Ready Player One.

Saturday, Jun 10th – (Day 65)

Today’s plan was to be a footy day with three games to check out. The first was watching Phil’s women’s team play at Manning at 9am. They were playing their annual aboriginal round match so there were plenty of festivities.

Half time huddle in the Manning game

The quality was actually pretty good and it was a lot of fun. It was also great catching up with Phil one last time, he’s such a champ!

After the game we headed back to Fremantle for an explore. We went up and down the main street and to a lookout tower over the docks, but then it started to pelt down rain so we looked for cover.

Hiking up Cockburn Lookout

We ended up grabbing a hot chocolate at a little shop, then found a farmers market type thing similar to Queen Victoria Market back home in Melbourne. By now we were getting sick of walking around, so we headed off to Cockburn a bit earlier, which is where our second footy game was.

Caidan was umpiring a footy game so we thought we’d go say hello and watch a bit. But first, we did a little walk up in the hills which gave decent views around the area. Then we headed back to the footy to watch the first half which was good fun.

Enjoying some amateurs Perth football

Then we drove to Optus Stadium for the Fremantle vs Richmond game. We got our seats pretty cheap as it said restricted viewing. I’ve got no idea how they were restricted though, they were second row from the fence about 20 metres out from goal and not restricted at all. Score!

It was largely an uneventful game with Richmond leading by as much as 36pts or so in the third quarter. We even considered leaving early to beat traffic, but decided to stay just in case. Good decision, as the match came down to the wire. We also got absolutely soaked, the rain was relentless.

After the game we headed back to the park and didn’t get up to much else. Another good day in Perth.

Sunday, Jun 11th – (Day 66)

We awoke pretty early this morning. I was catching up with Con, my trading buddy from Perth, then going for breakfast in town with another few guys who are into trading.

Con come around 8:30am which meant Linnie had a morning to play Zelda and catch up on some washing with a rare day with no rain.

The setting of our caravan park

It was great catching up with some traders and having a chat with some new people. Afterwards Con gave me a tour of Perth before dropping me back at the park. We spent the rest of the afternoon at the caravan park and not getting up to much.

Later that night I had a Zoom meeting with some of my trading friends back home in Victoria, so it was a busy day of talking trading! The chat went for about 2.5hrs.
